This March, Luca will be participating in a wonderful charity event. This is the first year that the “One” Photography Contest is being held and Luca is very excited to be a part of the process. The contest has Luca and eleven other talented professional photographers tossing their digital cameras, PhotoShop, computers and lighting equipment to the wayside and going beyond old school. They will be on a level playing field out there, all using the same film camera that some of them have no experience with. Along with the Hasselblad film camera, they have only one roll of film, the same model and location to shoot for only one hour.

This competition forces the contestants to go back in time, to focus on the purest form of the art of portraiture. There is no trial and error. Just 24 exposures to emphasize their true skill. They will rely on their understanding of the technical art of photography, lighting and posing and drawing out the required emotion from the subject.

The contest is exciting on it’s own but another wonderful part of the event will have the portraits printed and put on display anonymously at the gala night on March 28, 2013. The photographers will be their own judges and once a winner is announced the portraits will be auctioned off in support of the Breast Cancer Support Services charity.

Sometimes it’s a bit of a struggle getting kids to pay their full attention and participate in the photo session. These two were a bit rambunctious until I promised them ice cream :) Then it was all smiles. We like to keep our photo sessions light and fun and this one was no exception. Lots of goofing around and stupid jokes. Can’t wait to do it again. 

Speaking of warmer weather, I don’t think Matt and Kristi will have anything to worry about in that regard on their wedding day since they’ll be getting married in Costa Rica. I told them that I shoot destination weddings and kept dropping hints that they should take me along but they just didn’t seem to get it ;)

These 2 are a super cute couple and I’m happy to have had the chance to meet them and hang out.

I’m always excited to try shooting in new locations. I can be a little nervous about it sometimes, since I don’t really know what I’m going to find when I get there. When Lindsay wanted to do her engagement session at Discovery Harbour in Penetanguishene I wasn’t sure what to expect. I’ve lived in Barrie a while now, but I’ve never made the trek to Penetang (as the cool kids call it). I do most of my photography in Barrie, Toronto or Muskoka. Penetang is a beautiful little town and I loved it. I think I might have worn Shawn out a little bit even, but Lindsay didn’t seem to mind the glam of a photo shoot.

Jill & Scott, I’m so happy that I could do this for you and I’m just so stoked about how it all went! Could. Not. Be. Happier. Thanks for letting me experiment at your wedding!

Here’s some highlights.

Would I do it differently the next time? Maybe a little bit. I’d like to project the images in a slideshow as they come up. That would be pretty cool. I’d also like to dress the booth up a little and have a way to display the props a little better, so that people don’t have to dig so much. Other than that, it went so well that it’s just about exactly what I was hoping for.

The first set of pictures were taken at Blue Mountain where everyone was very gracious in letting us shoot in their restaurants. The rest of the images are from my personal favourite spot in Collingwood, the Grain Terminal. It’s an amazing grungy, edgy location that’s in the middle of a beautiful park right on the water. There’s three completely different locations in the same place. I love it there.
